Post-Disney Blues
All the laundry is washed and put away and guess who is back to making beds and cooking and cleaning.
Yes, that'd be me.
Sad last breakfast is yesterday's news. The kids surprised that they don't get to go to a musical after dinner, wander off to try to amuse themselves.
Vacation is well and truly over.
So what's to be done once I'm in a post Disney funk with no Disney on the calendar for ages?
Here are some of my (many) coping mechanisms.
Plan For A Magical Future
Nothing eases the pain of ending a vacation quite so much as knowing that it is "See Ya Real Soon!" rather than "Goodbye." There's something about knowing you're definitely coming back that eases the sting of post cruise blues. If you missed rebooking onboard, you can always book once your sea legs are a distant memory.
While you're at it, create a cruise bucket list (TA, Hawaii, Alaska, Norwegian Fjords, etc.) of dream cruises and put them out there on a list, with a year. It helps us to know when and how much to save.
Play Pretend
Imagine you had a million dollars. Now go look at the website and plan a trip you have no intention on taking. Planning a fictional trip isn't only a fun exercise, it helps me learn about new itineraries and stumble upon port adventures and activities that go on our "must do" list for next trip.
Put It In Writing
Rummage through old trip photos then write trip reports, blog reviews of specific experiences or even write books recounting vacations.
Write and submit articles on your Disney vacation. (Passporter is always looking for articles.) If you're really ambitious, put together a vacation movie, complete with it's own trailer.
Play Armchair Quarterback
Develop opinions on all the hot button issues on the forums on the DISboards. (Whether you choose to jump into the fray on those threads or not is entirely another matter.) What are the hot button issues? Usually anything involving breaking rules, any of the rules changing, etiquette and dress code are big deals on the discussion forums.
Pay It Forward
Pass on your experience to those who are looking forward to their first trip and help them plan their vacation. This could be in online forums (DISboards, Facebook groups, etc.) or with friends and family who are in the planning stages. There is nothing quite like helping a first time group of cruisers to help get my pixie dust back when I'm in a "my vacation countdown is still in the hundreds" funk.
Podcasts and Music
Listen to old podcasts about the different ships (DIS Unplugged, The Passporter Moms, WDW Radio and several other Disney podcasts routinely cover Disney Cruise Line.)
Listening to these podcasts put several future "must do" itineraries and adventures on our long range vacation list. Besides, it's fun to listen to someone else who loves Disney once all of your friends are done with hearing about your vacation.
Don't like podcasts? There is a wide variety of Disney music to listen to on the internet. Pandora Radio has several Disney stations or you can kick it old school style with some CDs.
Pixie Dust For Everyone!
Share the love of the high seas; talk someone else into trying out a Disney cruise!
Ben says I've created several "monsters" by doing this.
In fairness I warn everyone that Disney Cruising is the vacation equivalent to potato chips. They're addictive. Consider yourself warned.
Pack And Head to The Port
Surprise your significant other with a "just the two of us" short cruise while friends/family keep your children for a long weekend. Conspire with others to watch your plants/home/pets. Please be aware that you cannot book a cruise at the terminal, so plan at least a few weeks in advance to verify paperwork.
Bonus points if you get your husband's boss in on the surprise!
Paint a Room to Match the Ship
Then redecorate/refurnish the room with nautical theming and pictures and art from your vacation. Then redo your bathroom/bedroom/house nautically. I find this "vacation at home" feel very relaxing. I just need to improve my towel-gami skills and we're in business.
What do you do to get over the "Post Disney Blues"???
Yes, that'd be me.
