Homeschool Diaries | A New Adventure
So after several months of research, late night conversations and soul searching our family finally decided to take the plunge into uncharted waters. No, we're not cruising to Alaska or the Panama Canal (yet) although that is still firmly on our Disney bucket list.
We're joining the ranks of the Duggars; no, I'm not pregnant.
Starting at the end of the 2013-2014 school year, we're going to start homeschooling both of our children!
Channeling my #DisneySide, I decided to celebrate my new found peace and future with some books. After a bit of browsing, my #DisneySide Amazon Wish List is set for the foreseeable future. For a little light reading for me, I picked out The Thinking Fans Guide to Walt Disney World by Aaron Wallace. I thumbed through this a month ago in Barnes and Noble, meant to buy it and got distracted and set it down. It looks right up my alley though and I should have a book review on that once it arrives. More in the vein of homeschooling, I also selected Magical Mouse Schoolhouse: Learn While You Play at Walt Disney World Resort by Disney blogger Jodi Whisenhunt of Magical Mouse Schoolhouse fame.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to review Sonlight and several other curriculum for next year.
Do you homeschool?
Do you have a favorite K/2nd curriculum I should consider?
I'd love if you leave a comment!

Yes, I do. I've also read both those books and they're both great. Apologia offers some fabulous books that I'd highly recommend for first time homeschool families too. The first one I'd recommend is The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling by Debra Bell (http://shop.apologia.com/books/221-the-ultimate-guide-to-homeschooling.html). Then, there is Educating the Wholehearted Child by Clay & Sally Clarkson (http://shop.apologia.com/books/297-educating-the-wholehearted-child-3rd-edition.html). This second book is HUGE and not meant to just sit down and read straight through (or you might get overwhelmed and back out before you start) - but it's an awesome resource to have in your homeschool.
ReplyDeleteAnother book I got early on in my journey was Things We Wish We'd Known: A Guide to Abundant-Life Homeschooling by Bill & Diana Waring. (http://www.amazon.com/Things-Wish-Known-Abundant-Life-Homeschooling/dp/1883002427) This one was really helpful when I was feeling like a failure.
Thanks for the recommendations! I'm working my way through Ultimate Guide right now!
DeleteWill churchstuff to be your kids ONLY socializing then? This seems like a pretty big sacrifice.
ReplyDeleteNo, they still have scouts, run club, ballet, swim lessons and so forth.
DeleteCongratulations on your decision to homeschool! You can't go wrong as parents and teachers!!
ReplyDeleteNo homeschooling here but always looking for ways to bring Disney and more learning fun to the evenings and weekends. Can't wait to hear about your adventure!
ReplyDeleteNo homeschooling here either, though I do teach in a public high school. However, I am considering it for the near future with our son. Shhh...don't tell hubby.
ReplyDeleteI'm also going to steal your idea and create a #DisneySide Book Wish List on Amazon! Right now all of my Disney books are mixed in with everything else!
Awesome Lindsey! If you ever want information, I'm a newbie, but would be glad to point you to several people who have been very helpful as I researched homeschooling!
DeleteAwesome, best of luck. Our son attends k12.com which for us is public school but at home. He has a few classes he attends in the morning via video conference then works at his own pace on other assignments though out the day. It's been a bit more work than what my wife and I initially thought, but we love the flexibility of traveling and showing him the world where he can learn by experience.
ReplyDeleteWe looked at that and finally settled on curriculum (not K12) the other day. Now it's just a matter of trying to talk Chris into finishing out his school year at school. (He keeps asking if he can stay home and start home school already.
DeleteWe don't home school but i have thought about it, Congrats ;-)
