Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia ~ Art of the Theme

Tiggerific+Tuesday+Trivia Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia: Walt Disneys Silver Buffalo AwardWelcome Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia blog hoppers.  Thanks again to Jodi from +Magical Mouse Schoolhouse, Heidi from +Heidi's Head, and +Mike Ellis for co-hosting!
Let's imagine for a second that you wake up five minutes from now to find yourself on a Disney Cruise ship. How can you tell which one you are on?
You could just ask one of the cast members, but where is the fun in that?
Thinking back to the art of the theme show tour, you remember that the different ships embrace one of two differing art styles. That'd narrow it down to fifty-fifty on your guess of ship, and that's good enough for me.
Can you guess or remember what art styles the ships pull their themes from?
I'll get to that answer in a bit.

Much like the way that Main Street USA hearkens back to an idealized version of 1910 mid-western Main Streets of Walt Disney's childhood, the exterior look of all of the Disney fleet draw from that  golden age of the ocean liner.

While they look similar from afar, inside, there is a clear split once you head below decks.
The Disney Magic and the Disney Dream draw from the masculine, geometric designs of the Art Deco style from the 1930's and 1940's. Known for industrial, modern designs, the focus on symmetry, linear elements and the joy of embracing that "great big beautiful tomorrow", Art Deco lends an organized elegance to these two vessels. The automobiles, architecture and interior design of this aesthetic speak of hope and orderly progress. The Chrysler Building in New York is a classic example of Art Deco as is the Fox Theatre in St. Louis.
The Disney Wonder and the Disney Fantasy draw from the earlier Art Nouveau style. In the 1890's through the 1910's, art nouveau emerged in art, architecture and even home furnishings that echoed the feminine, curved beauty of the natural world. Flowers, curvilinear patterns and wave forms found in jewelery, Tiffany lamps and other organic designs. Famous examples include Gaudi's Park Güell in Barcelona and the art of Alphonse Mucha. There is even a collection by Hannah A that reimagines Disney Princesses in art nouveau style here.

Art Nouveau versus Art Deco
On the ships these styles lend to patterns in carpets, railings styles, art work, fonts and even the atrium statues. The masculine art deco ships feature Helmsman Mickey and Admiral Donald while Mademoiselle Minnie and Ariel grace the art nouveau ship lobbies.
So next time you magically find yourself on deck, take some time to notice the details and share the trivia with your fellow castaways!

  1. I love the Disney Cruise Line trivia as I've never had opportunity to actually be ON a Disney Cruise. It's fun to learn more about the ships! I would have had no clue what ship I woke up on - now I'll be more aware in the event that actually happens!

  2. The Disney ships are so beautiful! They're a stunning way to pay homage to the "golden age" of steamships.
